Google Drive now converts Office files inside Gmail. Google has added a new service to Gmail that allow users to edit Microsoft Office documents sent as email attachments directly from their inbox.
“We realize that as a Docs user, you still sometimes have to work with different file types, so we often launch updates to make it a little smoother for you. It’s now even easier for you to edit Office files where you often come across them—as attachments in your email.
With just one click on the new edit icon in Gmail attachments, you can automatically convert Office documents — giving you the additional benefits of a single document to keep track of, access from anywhere (even offline!), and revision history.”, the company wrote on Google+, “And while we’re on the topic of conversion, you can now import 15 new Office formats — including presentation show files (pps, ppsx), macro-enabled files, and template files — all with improved charts, images, and tables support! ”
Gmail now includes an “Edit with Google Docs” option when office files are emailed as an attachment. When user will select the “Edit will Google Docs” option, then it will automatically convert the document and opens it in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides. Also the modifications done by you will be saved on the Drive and you can easily access those docs and download them for offline use. You will also be able to see the revision history made to each document.
Gmail also now lets you import documents in 15 Office formats. New formats supported include:
dot, dotx, dotm*, docm* conversions to Google Docs
xlt, xltx, xltm*, xlsm* conversions to Google Sheets
pot, potx, potm*, pptm*, pps, ppsx, ppsm* conversions to Google Slides
After the conversion is made, you can edit, collaborate and share your file online.
