Is MacBook mandatory for iOS app development?
When you picture an iOS developer at work, you probably imagine someone sitting in a trendy café, hammering away at a shiny MacBook. It’s almost become a stereotype — the […]
Apple has officially released iOS 18.5, marking one of the final updates before the anticipated iOS 19 announcement at WWDC 2025. While this update doesn’t introduce sweeping changes, it brings several thoughtful enhancements, important security fixes, and a few new features that improve the daily iPhone experience. Here’s a comprehensive look at what’s new in iOS 18.5 and why you should consider updating.
In celebration of Pride Month, Apple has introduced a vibrant new “Pride Harmony” wallpaper. This dynamic background features shifting colours that move as you interact with your device, echoing Apple’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. The wallpaper pairs perfectly with the new Pride Edition Watch Bands, making your device feel fresh and meaningful for June and beyond.
Screen Time gets a notable upgrade in iOS 18.5. Parents will now receive instant notifications whenever the Screen Time passcode is used on a child’s device. This feature adds an extra layer of transparency and helps guardians monitor and manage device usage more effectively, preventing unauthorised changes to usage limits.
The Mail app sees subtle but useful updates:
Previously exclusive to iPhone 14 and newer, carrier-provided satellite connectivity is now available for all iPhone 13 models. This feature is particularly valuable for users in remote areas, allowing them to connect with emergency responders or loved ones when cellular coverage is unavailable. However, availability may be limited to select regions like the US, Australia, New Zealand, and the EU.
Purchasing content on the Apple TV app just got easier. iOS 18.5 enables the “Buy with iPhone” feature when making purchases on third-party smart TVs and streaming devices, streamlining the authentication process for a smoother experience.

Apple has optimised performance across the board, focusing on smoother app responsiveness, faster processing speeds, and enhanced stability. Users—especially those with newer devices like the iPhone 15 Pro Max—will notice apps launching more quickly and fewer system glitches.
iOS 18.5 delivers over 30 critical security patches. These address vulnerabilities in core apps such as Mail, Notes, FaceTime, the Phone app, and WebKit (the browser engine), as well as iCloud and other system components. Notably, the update fixes issues that could allow attackers to bypass authentication or cause denial-of-service attacks via malicious images.
Updating is simple:
While iOS 18.5 is a relatively modest update, it lays the groundwork for bigger changes coming with iOS 19. Apple has confirmed that at least one more update, iOS 18.6, is planned, primarily to bring Apple Intelligence features to China. For now, iOS 18.5 ensures your iPhone remains secure, stable, and just a bit more delightful to use.
iOS 18.5 may not be packed with flashy new features, but its thoughtful enhancements, crucial security fixes, and subtle interface improvements make it a worthwhile update for all eligible iPhone users. Whether you’re a parent, a frequent traveller, or simply someone who values a smooth and secure device, this update has something for you.
